This month, we remember the Sikhs who were targeted and killed in deliberate, state-led attacks in their own homes, meant to erase an entire people based solely on their beliefs.
Heather McPherson statement on the 41st anniversary of the Sikh Genocide
Families were torn apart, women and children suffered unimaginably, and survivors who now live in Canada and around the world continue to carry the weight of this trauma. Worse, with examples like the killing of Hardeep Singh, and the threats against the life of former NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, they live with the threats of ongoing transnational violence.
Remembering the 1984 Sikh Genocide is about more than looking back. It is about acknowledging the truth and confronting injustice.
Last year, New Democrats tried to pass a motion acknowledging this genocide as a first step towards seeking justice. The Liberals and Conservatives teamed up to block it. But, along with my fellow New Democrats, I am not going to give up on this important work.
This month, and every month, my heart is with the families who continue to seek justice for their loved ones.
