Your MP

Heather has 25 years of experience in building strong communities locally, nationally, and internationally. Before being elected to Parliament, she was Executive Director of an organization representing Alberta not-for-profit organizations that work on issues relating to poverty reduction, human rights, environmental protection, and gender equality. She has a Master of Education from the University of Alberta and has taught around the world.
Edmonton Strathcona is Heather’s home and she is raising her family in the Argyll community. As a working mother, she knows what families in her community are facing as costs go up and life gets less affordable.
Heather is fighting for real solutions for families in Edmonton Strathcona and across Canada, including universal pharmacare, affordable housing, and good pensions. She is committed to tackling the climate emergency and creating good green jobs and clean public transit.

Working for You

​Heather is the NDP Critic for Foreign Affairs and for International Development. She
is Deputy Critic for Canadian Heritage and Whip for the NDP Caucus. She also
serves as Vice-Chair of the Canada-Ukraine Friendship Association and is a
member of the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association. Her commitment to building
a more peaceful and just world has included visits to Ukraine and the Middle East to
speak with those affected by the wars there.
Heather has spoken out against the UCP plans to take Alberta out of the Canada
Pension Plan. She sponsored a private member’s bill in the House of Commons to
make it more difficult for provinces to leave the CPP.
She joined the fight to protect the Rocky Mountains and Eastern Slopes from
intrusive mining operations by tabling a private member’s bills to ensure all new coal
projects will be subject to federal environmental review.
​Heather’s private member’s bill on post-secondary education would separate
funding for the sector from the social transfer and create conditions for greater
access for students and fairer labour practices for faculty and staff.
Her bill on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder will help individuals, families,
medical professionals, and educators diagnose, treat, and manage ADHD better. It
would establish a national framework that focuses on providing health professionals and
educators with the training and resources they need to change outcomes for Canadians
living with ADHD.

 In Edmonton-Strathcona

Heather McPherson is the third generation of her family to live and raise her children in Edmonton Strathcona. 
Since she was elected MP in Edmonton Strathcona in October 2019, Heather McPherson has worked hard to represent the interests of her constituents and all Canadians. 
During the pandemic, Heather and her constituency office staff supported constituents who were struggling to pay their bills, keep their businesses operating, and bring their family members home from outside the country. They received hundreds of calls and thousands of emails. Heather hired additional staff to keep up with the volume of inquiries from many residents of Edmonton Strathcona about how to access the federal government's support programs. The constituency staff are regularly available to answer inquiries about COVID programs, issues with the CRA, seniors benefits, EI, student loans, and immigration.
