Statement on Lori Idlout Crossing the Floor

Learning that Lori Idlout has left the NDP was tough to hear. Lori and I worked together in caucus, standing up to Liberal cuts, hypocrisy, and arrogance.

I’m sad she’s leaving and that she’s made the choice to join the party we’ve been calling out together. I also believe in our party’s longstanding position: if a member wants to cross the floor, they should ask their constituents. They chose you. They chose your party. That decision belongs to them.

As I've been saying all along in this campaign, we've got a lot of work to do as a party. Listening, showing up, and building real relationships is how we rebuild the trust and support we need to win. I'm committed to doing that work.

There will always be voices that try to divide us. But as anyone who has spent time on a picket line knows, sticking together is how we make our voices heard. It’s how we win.

Public health care, pensions, and workers’ rights, the things that make us Canadian, exist because New Democrats fought for them. We built them, and we need to defend them.

We are also the only party prepared to clearly stand up to Donald Trump. Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre both backed the Netanyahu-Trump bombing of Iran. I absolutely condemn the Iranian regime, but bombing countries in violation of international law makes the world more dangerous, not safer.

Canadians need a strong NDP voice now more than ever.

I know, together, we can reconnect, rebuild, and deliver wins for them again.

Today’s attack on Iran by the United States and Israel is a serious violation of international law.

The repressive Iranian regime is a dictatorship that murders and brutalizes the Iranian people. But an illegal and unjustified war driven by Trump and Netanyahu will bring more civilian deaths and regional chaos.

MP and candidate for Leader of Canada’s NDP, Heather McPherson made the following statement on Iran

I strongly condemn the horrific attacks on brave Iranian people, and I am deeply concerned for the well-being of thousands of Iranian protesters, including the loved ones of many Canadians.

I commend the bravery of Iranians protesting the regime, and I stand in solidarity with the Iranian people, who have suffered under a brutal regime for decades. They deserve to live in freedom. Iranian people, like all people, deserve a future that is democratic and free.

For years, I have urged the Government of Canada to do more to support the human rights of the Iranian people.
